Kai Epstude is a member of the scientific staff in the Department of Social Psychology at the University of Groningen, where Epstude has been based since 2008. Much of Epstude's research concerns counterfactual thinking, including its motivational consequences, its role in regret, and how factors such as partisanship, grandiose narcissism, and moral reasoning shape the direction and content of counterfactual thought. Epstude also works on misinformation, persuasion, and source credibility, examining how source expertise and trustworthiness influence belief and behaviour. Additional work spans emotion regulation in negative-feedback situations, conspiracy beliefs, and intergroup contact.
