John W. Berry

John W. Berry is a Professor of Psychology at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, where Berry has served since 1969. Berry received a PhD in Psychology from the University of Edinburgh in 1966 and subsequently earned Honorary Doctorates from the University of Athens and Université de Genève. Berry is a Fellow of the Canadian Psychological Association, the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study, the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology, and the International Academy for Intercultural Research, and has received major awards including the Lifetime Contribution Award from the International Academy for Intercultural Research and recognition for contributions to psychology as a science from the Canadian Psychological Association. Berry's research spans cross-cultural and intercultural psychology, with primary interests in the role of culture in human development, acculturation, and intercultural relations, with particular emphasis on applications to immigration, multiculturalism, and educational and health policy. Berry has authored or coauthored more than 30 books and numerous peer-reviewed articles examining topics including intercultural relations among immigrant populations, cultural differences in individualism-collectivism, acculturation preferences and adaptation across diverse societies, and the ecological and contextual foundations of cross-cultural psychology.
