efficacy

Definition

Efficacy refers to the performance of an intervention under ideal and controlled circumstances, particularly its ability to achieve intended outcomes such as improving discernment or the ability to distinguish true from false information. In misinformation intervention research, efficacy is typically measured through item evaluation tasks in which participants rate social media posts or news headlines on scales assessing accuracy judgments or sharing intentions. However, a critical distinction exists between efficacy (successful lab studies) and effectiveness (real-world impact), as lab-based efficacy does not guarantee that interventions will achieve their desired goals in real-world conditions, where effect sizes are substantially reduced and contextual factors and barriers significantly influence uptake and longevity.

Efficacy and Effectiveness

Efficacy and effectiveness represent distinct but related concepts in misinformation intervention research. While efficacy demonstrates that interventions work in controlled lab settings, effectiveness concerns their actual impact under real-world conditions. Research comparing lab experiments to field studies shows that effect sizes in real-world environments are substantially reduced compared to laboratory results.

Efficacy and Testing Effects

Testing effects significantly compromise the efficacy claims of misinformation interventions by artificially boosting measured outcomes in lab settings. When interventions are immediately tested on participants, this act of testing inflates the apparent impact of the intervention, yet effectiveness can diminish once the testing context is removed.
