Definition
Sustainable refers to a publishing model designed to persist economically and ethically by compensating the labor on which it depends, rather than extracting that labor without payment. In academic publishing, the term addresses the structural reliance on unpaid peer reviewers and editors, whose uncompensated work has long subsidized profit margins that are, by some accounts, unmatched in other industries.
