Definition

Behavioral skills refers to the component of the Information-Motivation-Behavioral Skills framework concerned with an individual's perceived capacity to perform a target behavior. In the context of jihadi media, this component operates not through direct instruction but through repeated exposure to modeled violence, weapons use, and successful operations against named institutions and officials. The TTP corpus examined showed weapons handling or use in 224 of 533 coded clips, with graphic violence in 90 and targeted attacks in 129, while only a single clip demonstrated how to make explosives and none called for lone-actor attacks. Rather than teaching operational skills, TTP videos present resolve and divine favor as functional substitutes for training, effectively building audience confidence through what the framework reconceptualizes as vicarious online efficacy transmission, the process by which media consumption strengthens beliefs in one's capacity to participate in jihad. Intercoder reliability for the behavioral skills dimension reached a kappa of .78, the highest among the three IMB components coded in the study.

Behavioral Skills and Self-efficacy

The behavioral skills component of the IMB framework is directly linked to self-efficacy through the concept of vicarious online efficacy transmission, by which repeated media exposure to successful jihadi operations raises audience beliefs in their own capacity to act. TTP videos accomplish this by breaking the Pakistani state into identifiable, seemingly reachable targets rather than by conveying technical training, making participation appear within reach for viewers who have no operational experience.

Behavioral Skills and Motivation

Behavioral skills and motivation are treated as analytically distinct but operationally integrated dimensions in TTP propaganda, with codes from both dimensions appearing together in 37 of 44 videos. Appeals to religious duty, Muslim victimhood, and community identity that constitute the motivation component appear alongside the operation-modeling content that constitutes the behavioral skills component, suggesting the two work in concert to move audiences from emotional arousal toward perceived readiness to act.

Behavioral Skills and Information

All three IMB dimensions, including information, motivation, and behavioral skills, co-occurred in 177 of 533 coded clips, indicating that TTP videos frequently pair ideological framing with behavioral modeling in single segments. The informational content, which establishes the group's political vision and constructs enemy categories, provides the interpretive context within which behavioral skills content acquires meaning for the viewer.
