Methodologies refers to the specific analytic approaches and operationalisation strategies employed to test psychological hypotheses, particularly those involving interaction effects at the individual level in meta-analytic research. In acculturation research, four bivariate methodologies have been used to approximate the integration hypothesis: the summative approach, the multiplicative approach, Euclidean distance, and the midpoint split approach, each of which collapses two continuous cultural orientation scores into a single integration proxy before computing bivariate correlations with adaptation outcomes. These approaches share a common failure to control for the main effects of each cultural orientation, meaning the resulting effect sizes can be driven by engagement with only one culture rather than both. The multivariate methodology, implemented through meta-analytical structural equations modelling, provides the only validated test of the individual-level interaction the integration hypothesis actually specifies, and re-analysis across two datasets totalling N = 7,512 showed that bivariate methodologies inflate explained variance to approximately 2% while the multivariate approach yields interaction effects near zero.

Methodologies and Interaction Effects
